Rye Bonfire was huge success says the Bonfire Society

Rye's bonfire celebrations were a huge success. Crowds were down on last year because of predicted bad weather but those who lined the streets of the long procession route enjoyed a spectacular evening.

Bonfire societies from across Sussex marched with flaming torches and were joined by drumming groups and musicians from Folleville in France, wearing medieval dress and playing period instruments.

Big showpieces included Rye's burning boat and Scorch, the bonfire society's fire breathing dragon.

The Salts were slightly muddy but this did not top a huge crowd enjoying the bonfire and big fireworks display.

Rye Mayor Sam Souster stepped into the role of Rye Fawkes, at the last minute after former Dr Who Tom Baker had to pull out.
Souster said: "I hadn't expected to do it but I was happy to step in. The bonfire society are a good crowd and it was a great experience.

"The fireworks were loud, colourful and all one expects for such an important event in our calendar."

A number of pubs around the town organised outside bars and hot food for revellers.

Chris Drew, from Rye Bonfire Society, said: "It was a very successful event, helped by the weather window which kept the event dry until around 10.00pm.

"Numbers of visitors appeared to be a bit down on last year - probably because the weather forecast suggested that it could get wet by 8.00 or 9.00pm.

The street collection was better than expected - the count on Sunday totalled around £4200 - which was actually up on last year, so that's approximately one-third of next year's event paid for. Thanks to every one who contributed.

"One problem was that the Station Approach toilets were locked. This was not as arranged with Rother Council.

"Coach parking has traditionally been reserved in the Station car park, but this year Southern gave notice that the car park would be closed due to public order concerns - not regarding visiting societies' members but more to do with visitors travelling by train after the event. "Alternative arrangements were pre-planned to park coaches on Rye Wharf, down the Harbour Road, with the usual drop-off facilities unaffected.

"We did have an issue in that it had been agreed that there would be a East-bound rat-run left open through the town through the carpark and up Love Lane and Deadmans Lane to the London Road, but in the event the car park was completely closed-off."
